Pinal county contains 5,371 square miles. The eastern portion of the county is mostly made up of mountaineous terrain, with peaks as high as 6000 feet. Copper mining is also important in the eastern portion. The western portion is primarily low desert with some irrigated agriculture. The county was formed in 1875. Florence is the county seat. The population in Pinal County was 201,565 in 2003. Copper mining remains an important component of the county's economy. Phelps Dodge maintains active mines in Globe, Miami and Superior, producting half of the country's annual copper output. Other towns in Pinal County have a history of copper mining.
